Department of Civil Engineering National Institute of Technology Calicut CEU398 Mini Project S6 B.

Tech in Civil Engineering

1. Title of the project: STUDY ON HYDRAULIC CHARACTERISTICS OF SOILS.

2. Brief description of the work propose and methodology :

INTRODUCTION
The permeability of a soil is a very important engineering property because it has a dominating influence on the total engineering behaviour of soils. The difference in shear and compressibility behaviour of soil can, to a considerable extent, be explained in terms of the difference inflowing flow of water through the soils such as seepage under dams, dewatering and drainage of sub grades, embankments, excavations etc. The permeability of soil governs the selection of soil to be used for cores in earth dams and drains in clay. So it becomes necessary to study on the hydraulic characteristics of soil.

OBJECTIVE
To carry out permeability tests on various soils and to determine the coefficient of permeability. To compare the coefficient of permeability values of various soils like sand, silt, clay, silty sand etc. To contribute our results for engineering and planning for structures.

METHODOLOGY
Various soil samples from different areas of NITC will be collected. Permeability tests will be conducted on these samples. The methods adopted will be constant head permeability test, falling head or variable head permeability test, capillary permeability test and percolation test.
