ESTIMATION OF CARBOXYLIC ACID Aim of the experiment- to determine the percentage purity of the given sample of acetic acid

using std. alkali solution Principle- acetic acid solution can be directly titrated against the std. alkali solution using phenolphthalein indicator and hence estimated.

Procedure 1.Standardiztion of NaOH solution About 1.5 g of oxalic acid crystals are weighed out accurately into 250 ml std flask, dissolved in water made up to the mark and shaken well for uniform concentration. 25 ml of this solution is pipetted out into a conical flask. 3 drops of phenolphthalein indicator is added and titrated against the given NaOH solution in the burette. Titration is repeated to get agreeing value. 2. Estimation of Acetic acid About 15-20 drops of the given acetic acid sample is weighed out accurately into a 250ml std flask. It is dissolved in water, made up to the mark and shaken well for uniform strength. 25ml of this is pipetted out into a conical flask. 3 drops of phenolphthalein indiactor is added and titrated against the NaOH solution in the burette. Titration is repeated to get agreeing value. Result Percentage purity of the given sample of acetic acid=

OBSERVATIONS and CALCULATIONS 1.Standardization of NaOH solution Weight of the weighing bottle + oxalic acid= Wt of the weighing bottle= Wt of oxalic acid taken= Strength of the solution prepared, N1= wt X 4/63 2.Titration of 25 ml oxalic acid against NaOH solution. Indicator used- 3 drops of phenolphthalein Colour change- colourless to pink

3.Estimation of acetic acid Weight of empty beaker= Wt of beaker + acetic acid= Wt of acetic acid taken, W1= Titration of 25ml of acetic acid against NaOH solution Indicator used- 3 drops of phenolphthalein Colour change- colourless to pale pink.
