Tutorial Guide – Week 3

After discussion with the course coordinator, it was agreed that the basic structure of 
the tutorials for Engineering Physics would be
Odd weeks Students do quiz (20 mins) followed by addressing some of the 
problems assigned for the previous fortnight
Even weeks Start with feedback on the marked quiz (20 mins) followed by 
addressing conceptual questions for the previous fortnight. 

Tutorial Format

Tutors should separate students for the quiz (avoid copying).

The tutorial quiz should take approx 20 minutes . Make sure they are
named as this will constitute your roll call to be recorded in the
tutorial folder.

Collect the Quizzes.

Form the students into groups with a maximum of 4 per group.

During quiz weeks the idea is for groups to address a number of the
PROBLEMS at the end of each chapter as indicated in the Exercise
set below.

The tutor is free to select 4 or 5 of the problems below, let the

students discuss the problems for 15-20 minutes and arrive at a
consensus. Tutor may emphasize problem solving strategy, key
physics issues, reinforce significant figures, attention to detail etc.

The tutor is then to engage the students in a discussion about each

problem, attempt to involve most students, identify possible
misconceptions, challenge those misconceptions and convey
reasoning which results in the correct answer.
