 The Phenomenon of attracting iron and

pointing in the north-south direction is called
magnetism
 Magnetite is natural magnet.
 Artificial magnet are man made.They are
made of different shapes.
 Magnetic substances are those that are
attracted by magnets and can be converted
into magnets.
 Properties of Magnet

 Property of attraction:- Magnets attracts

iron and opposite poles of other
magnets.
 Property of repulsion:- Magnets repel
like poles of other magnets
 Property of direction:- freely suspended
magnets come to rest in the north –
south direction
 Uses of magnets
 Magnets are used in bulletin boards and toys.
 In dynamos of bicycles and automobiles. In an
electricity meter, refrigerator door etc.
 In medicine, magnet therapy is gaining
popularity today.
 Magnetic tapes are used as audio and video
tapes and in computers to store information.

The Earth as a Magnet
 The earth behaves as if there is a huge
magnet in it, having its north pole near
the geographic south pole and its south
pole near the geographic north
pole.This is the reason why a freely
suspended magnet comes to rest in the
north-south direction .
