ACTIVITIES TO ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO K0RERO

• Te Ara Reo scripts


• Mix n’ match – pictures with text
• Chinese whispers – making sentences longer or kiwaha/proverbs
• Listen to waiata and students fill in the missing kupu
• Someone describes something e.g. food or an object and they guess
what it is
• Headbands – someone sits in front of whiteboard and someone writes
the name of a person on the whiteboard. Then the student on the chair
asks questions about who he/she thinks they are. Students replying can
only reply with a ae/kao.
• Pictures of anything – 2 minutes to think then korero ohorere
• Research a topic and present findings
• Pretend to be a T.V. reporter (Te Karere) or a radio D.J. (Radio Watea)
• Dialogue on the phone
• Beginning sentences that have to be finished
• Retell a story in your own words that you are very familiar with E.g.
Rangi & Papa
• Whakapapa chart to talk about
• Whanau photo’s to talk about
• True or false stories – describe events etc students then decide T/F
• Coming up with a alibi E.g robbery
• He ngeru kei a māua tahi.
• Kua kitea e māua te pikitia …. Finding things in common
• E rata ana māua tahi ki a Harry Potter We have both …
• Ko te tino kai ki a māua tahi ko te kai kōhua
• Headbands – tangata rongonui

• Truth or lies –3/4 students pick a word from dictionary come up with
meanings but only 1 is correct OR
• Sentence starters / middle / endings E.g. - .......ka tahuri mai te kuri ka 
tiro makutu mai ki a au..............
• Give an excuse about why you did complete your homework
• Various pictures as topics of conversation
• Debates on current topics E.g ANZAC, smacking, boy racers…
• Good things while I was at Kohanga/preschool,primary school,
intermediate
• When I finsih school … straight away I will / 2 months later … / 6
months later… / 1 year later …
• My dream house
• Giove students famous people profiles from Mauri ora resources and
they teach the class about these people
• Read a nursery ryhym in english then re tell it in Maori E.g Maui, Rona,
Hinemoa and Tutanekai …
• Using whakatauki/aki, pepeha – explain it then give an example, finally
add your own opnion about it
• Do plays from journals
• Te karere reporter – stating: where you are located
wahi/setting/place, wa/time/season/weather and the ocassion for
being there.
