Structure of Earth
 Earth is made up of a series of
layers that formed early in the
planet’s history.
 Heavier material gravitated toward
the center and lighter material
floated to the surface
 The lower mantle consists of
molten rock, which is surrounded
by partially molten rock in the
asthenosphere. Link to see the Diagram

Crust
 Crust is outermost layer of Earth.
 The crust is solid and relatively
thin.
 The dry land of Earth’s surface is
called the continental crust.
 It is about 15 to 75 km (9 to 47 mi)
thick.
 The crust has a definite boundary.

Mantle
 Mantle lies between the outer crust
and the core.
 Temperatures in the mantle are
high, reaching about 3700° C (apx.
6700° F).
 The relative size of the mantle can
be understood by likening the
earth in cross-section to a soft-
boiled egg.
 The mantle is separated from theBack
Core
 Core is the innermost part of Earth.
 The core of Earth extends from
beneath the mantle to the very
center of the planet.
 The radius of the core is
approximately 3,500 km (2,200
mi).
 Earth’s core is the source of the
planet’s magnetic field. Back
