Day: Friday Time: 9.00a.m. 9.30a.m. Date: 28/2/2011 Form: Form 4A Number of students: /31 Topic: Chapter 5 Straight Lines Subtopic: 5.3 Intercepts Learning Objectives: Students will be taught to understand the concept of intercept. Learning Outcomes: After the lesson, students will be able to: i. Determine the x-intercept and the y-intercept of a straight line. ii. Derive the formula for the gradient of a straight line in terms of the x-intercept and the y-intercept. Prior Knowledge: Determining the gradient of a straight line. Teaching Methods: Inquiry method, Inductive method, Cooperative learning think-pair-share; team-pair-solo, Discussion method Teaching Strategy: Using diagram, worksheets and power point. Teaching Aids: Power point CCTS: Making inference, Thinking systematically, Creating definition, Making compare and contrast, Making synthesis Noble Values: Self-confidence, Cooperation, Social skills

Step/Duration Content Step 1 Induction Set (5 minutes) Revision of gradient. Concept of intercept Any line will cut either y-axis or xaxis or both. The cutting point is called intercept.

Activity (Discourse) Teachers Role 1. Teacher asks students to draw a line of a) Positive gradient. b) Negative gradient. c) Constant gradient. d) Vertical line. 2. Teacher relates the activity with the learning outcomes that the students should achieve today.

Students Role 1. On worksheets given, students draw lines according to instructions.

Step 2 Instructional Development (5 minutes)

Definition of intercept The x-intercept of a straight line is the xcoordinate of the point where the line cuts the x-axis. The y-intercept of a straight line is the ycoordinate of the point where the line cuts the y-axis.

1. Teacher asks students to form groups of two. 2. Teacher distributes worksheets to all students. 3. Teacher asks students to work on worksheets individually. 4. After few minutes, teacher allows students to compare and discuss on their work with partners. 5. Teacher randomly picks a few students to present their work. 6. Teacher discusses on the definition of intercept, and the
