In this study I will determine the probability that the difference between actually observed sample data and expected data have occurred by chance of the question: Should student-athletes be paid to play at the college level? This Question was asked to both females and males in Math 101 class. The level of significance is = 0.005. My null hypothesis is: There is no significant difference between male and female students at Northern Illinois University in their response to the question. Should student-athletes be paid to play at the college level? An alternative hypothesis would be, There is a significant difference between male and female students at Northern Illinois University in their response to the question: Should student-athletes be paid to play at the college level? Observed response: Male Yes 29 No 68 No Opinion 7 104 Expected response: Yes No No Opinion Male 25.04 66.22 12.73 Female 33.96 89.78 17.23 Female 30 88 23 141 59 156 30 245

There are (3-1)(2-1)=2 degrees of freedom. We chose = 0.005. With the degree of freedom and the I looked at the Chi Square Probability Distribution chart to determine the Chi Square that will cause rejection, which is 10.587. Finally from the observed data and the expected data I calculated the chi square statistic, which came out to be 5.655.

IV.

I do not reject the null hypothesis since the chi-square came out to be 6.034, which was compared to the chi-squared of the Chi-Square Probability Distribution Chart, which is 10.597. Since the chi-square from the survey data (6.034) was smaller than chi-square from the chart (10.597) the null hypothesis is not rejected.

I agree with the null hypothesis the sex of the voters does not effect their answer to the question.
