Annie Green Mr.

Neuburger English 102 11 October, 2011 Survivor Testimony Ursula Levy was born in Ausiach, Germany. Her birthdate was May 11, 1945. She was put into a convent until 1943 with her brother, George. At the convent there were 50 children with Jewish backgrounds. Ursula and George were two of five children with Jewish background on both sides of the family. On May 10, 1940 Holland was invaded by the Nazi party. In April of 1943 she and her brother were deported. She stated the worst camp was the all-womens camp, because she was separated from her brother. However, on Sundays her brother would visit. Eventually her brother and herself were both reunited and traveled to various camps. They both contracted typhus and survived. Ursula remembered seeing the French women. She described them as full of life, so she always admired them. She was very fortunate in terms of where she was placed. She never was sent to a death camp. She did not get stuck in the Warsaw Ghetto, nor did she find herself in Auschwitz. A lot of hope and strength arose from the presence of her brother throughout their experience in Nazi control. I feel as though presence of a loved one can help prolong survival in situations like hers. Ursula spoke elegantly. She did not speak with anything besides pride. My favorite quotes from her were, We were stripped of our dignity in life and death, and I saw this cherry tree and it was so beautiful, because it symbolized life. I loved listening to her testimony, because she spoke of never having fear and made sure to mention she did have hope. I have so

much admiration in the lifes of the Holocaust survivors, because not only did she physically survive, but she survived emotionally. Word Count-302
