Post-Laboratory Questions
1. What is the reason for using ether in Steps #3 and #5 of Part II? We use ether to seperate sodium benzoate and benzyl alcohol. Ethers are organic solvents that are insoluble in water; the benzyl alcohol will mix with the ether and the sodium bicarbonate will mix with the water. Two seperate solutions will form due to their respective insolubility. 2. Benzyl alcohol is more soluble in ether than water. Provide two specific reasons to explain this phenomenon. Benzyl alcohol is more soluble in ether than water because both benzyl alcohol and water have similar polarities (like dissolves like). The hydrogen bond on the benzyl alcohol also causes it to be soluble in an ether.

3. Which solute, sodium benzoate or benzoic acid, will dissolve more easily in water at room temperature? Explain. Sodium benzoate will dissolve more easily in water at room temperature because both sodium benzoate and water have similar polarities.

4. Why is 6 M HCl added in Step #7 of Part II? Sodium Benzoate contains positively charged sodium and negatively charged oxygen. HCL is added to protonate the sodium benzoate, adding hydrogen to the negatively charged oxygen and causing the sodium to break off.

5. How were you able to purify benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid? Through the process of distillation, we were able to purify benzoic acid. We heated the solution, allowed it to cool to room temperature to promote recrystallization, then filtered the product to remove water. Benzyl alcohol was seperated from the impurities in the solution through their differences in boiling points.
