Solution 2

Solution 2: Machining cylinder sleeves with dual feed

The cylinder sleeves in the engine block were also traditionally machined on special machines. Normally tools with three inserts were used here where one of them, the fine machining insert, could be adjusted using a drawbar. However, an additional axis with a relevant controller was necessary for this sort of compensation. In addition, the feed is greatly restricted. For machining on machining centres, MAPAL has developed a new and very beneficial concept. The compensation affects two of the six inserts and is achieved without special spindle (U axis). The six-cutting edge design with MAPAL HX blades allows for double feeds and therefore reduces the machining time by half. In addition, tool life and, due to the better cutting material utilization, cutting material costs are improved. Cutting edge lifting controlled by the cooling pressure gives rise to a surface absolutely free of grooves. This minimises the honing time.
