    The cd4017be input should be connected to a +5v source before testing. It should be connected at the end of the switch which is connected to pin no 14 at the other end. Once satisfied with the working, connect the switch to the clock output of the ic 555 timer(taken at pin no. 3), instead of the +5v.

    erratum

    please do note the following correction in the circuit of figure 1 in this month's
    issue.
    the cd4017be input should be connected to a +5v source before testing with the
    clock pulse.
    it should be connected at the end of the switch which is connected to pin no 14 at
    the other end.

    turn the switch on and off repeatedly and notice the chang in high, low
    configuration of the pins of cd4017be.
    once satisfied with the working, connect the switch to the clock output of the ic
    555 timer(taken at pin no. 3), instead of the +5v supply.
