Correlation Coefficients (DR SEE KIN HAI)

Pearson product-moment corr coeff ( Spearmans rho) describes the relationship between 2 continuous variables. 2. Phi-coeff = correlation between dichotomous or categorical variables. 3. Point-biserial corre = correlation between a continuous and a categorical variable 4. Spearmans rank-order corr = a nonparametric measure 5. Coeff from + 1 to 1, + 0.5 or 0.5 indicate moderate positive / negative relationship between the 2 variables. 1. Assumption 1. Data must be collected from related pairs 2. Scale of measurement should be interval or ratio 3. Variable should be normally distributed 4. Relationship must be linear Example: Compute Pearsons correlation, a scatter plot and Spearmans rho on Scores for the musical ability and mathematical ability of 10 children

Coursework (Use Work5.sav) 20 students wishing to enter UBD were given IQ test and their tertiary entrance examination score average (TEE). You suspect that a positive relationship exists between the 2 variables (IQ and TEE) and wish to test this directional hypothesis (one-tailed). Run a correlation analysis for the two variables and determine if the relation is significant.
