Transformer-Less Power Supply (SMPS)

Abstracts
One of the major problem that is to be solved in an electronic circuit design is the production of low voltage DC power supply from AC to power the circuit. The conventional method is the use of a step-down transformer to reduce the 230 V AC to a desired level of low voltage AC. The most suitable and low cost method is the use of a switching mode power supply.

Block Diagram

Brief Description

Our design is divided into different blocks. First of all we receive the input voltage of approximately 220-230 Volts and a fuse is connected for the protection of the later ciruit and from there it is rectified into uni-directinal supply from bidirectional supply and after that switches are introduced for making it a swithing supply. We will use BJTs as switching devices. Further in the circuit there is a chopper. After that filtering is done to remove the ripples and make output smooth, which will be approximately 24 Volts.

Objective
We need the power supply in almost every electronic device and day by day the size of the devices is also reducing. In order to minimize the size of the power supply and make it cheaper we need to implement a technique to build a transformer-less power supply because cost and weight of transformer is very high which makes power supply costly and heavy too.

Expected Result
We are trying to design a transformer-less power supply with in the range of 100W to 500W, in which we are using chopper and BJTs as switching device.

Specifications: Input Output Voltage Power Voltage Current 210-230 V(ac) 100~500 W 24 V(dc) 7~8 A

Applications Of The Project There are many applications of the transformer-less power supply but the few are listed below: 1- Personal computers (C.P.U) 2- Solar System 3- U.P.S 4- Fire Alarm 5- Security Camera
