COMPARISONS OF INEQUALITY
(nouns, adjectives and adverbs)
Spanish uses ms (more) or menos (less, fewer) + an adjective, a noun or an adverb to
make comparisons of inequality. Than is expressed by que. When adjectives are
compared, they must agree in number and gender with the noun they modify. In these
comparisons, the adjective modifies the first subject in the sentence.
l es ms alto que mi hermana.
El dinero es menos importante que el
amor.
Ms que and menos que mean more than and less than and are used after verbs.
They are invariable.
Mi prima estudia ms que mi
hermano.
T practicas menos que yo.
Irregular Comparatives
The following adjectives usually do not use ms or menos for their comparative forms. They have
irregular comparatives which must agree in number with the noun they modify.
adjective

malo

comparative form

(better)
peor

joven
(young)
menor

viejo
(old)
mayor
(older - for a person)
In the spaces provided, supply the appropiate comparative expression.
EL SUPERLATIVO
Spanish expresses the superlative of an adjective by using a definite article (el, la, los, or las)
before both regular and irregular comparative forms. After the adjective, de is used to convey in
or of.
Alfredo es el (estudiante) ms
inteligente de la clase.
El sbado es el mejor da de la

The preposition de (from, of) must contract to del before the masculine singular definite article el.
Before the other definite articles (la, los and las) de does not contract.

POSSESSION WITH DE
Spanish never uses an apostrophe to show possession; instead, a phrase with de is used to say
that it is, or they are, the object(s) of someone. Thus, Johns book becomes el libro de Juan.
In a question Spanish uses de quin (one person) or de quines (more than one person) for
whose.

Preterit
1. to refer to a completed action or to a specific occurrence in the past:
Yo fui a Cancn el ao pasado.
l avin aterriz a las seis de la tarde.
Imperfect
1. to refer to a repeated or habitual action in the past.
La aeromoza volaba a Madrid con frecuencia.
48
1. to refer to mental state or activity (what one had in mind) in the past.
El hombre quera alquilar un vehculo de
doble traccin.
Since the verbs in a sentence can refer to different types of situations or activities, it is
common to use both tenses in the same sentence. The imperfect gives the time frame or sets the
background; the preterit presents the actions that occur within that background or time frame.
Los turistas iban al parque cuando vieron
los monos.
The verbs querer, saber and conocer have significantly different meanings in the
imperfect and preterit tenses. In the imperfect, querer means wanted and saber and
conocer both mean knew. In the preterit, querer means tried or attempted in the
affirmative and refused in the negative; saber in the preterit means found out, and
conocer means met (See the preterit in chapter VII).
Ella quera abrir la puerta.
El nio quiso abrir la puerta.
Nosotros ya la conocamos.
Cundo la conociste t?
