Mighty Meaty Pasta Sauce

Thick, rich, meaty and flavorful Bolognese sauce


If you make this super-meaty pasta sauce for your meat-loving family members, theyll think youre a culinary superhero! 1 tbsp 1 cups cup 1 tbsp 1 lbs 8 oz 2 tsp tsp 1 can 1 can 1 can 1 tbsp 1 tbsp tsp cup olive oil chopped red onions each diced celery and diced carrots minced garlic (568 g) extra-lean ground beef (227 g) light spicy Italian sausage, casing removed dried Italian seasoning dried fennel seeds (28 oz/796 mL) no-salt-added diced tomatoes, undrained (14 oz/398 mL) no-salt-added tomato sauce (5.5 oz/156 mL) tomato paste balsamic vinegar brown sugar each salt and freshly ground black pepper minced fresh basil leaves

PER SERVING 240 calories, 9 g total fat (3 g saturated fat), 23 g protein, 15 g carbohydrate, 3.2 g fiber, 69 mg cholesterol, 459 mg sodium

Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add onions, celery, carrots and garlic. Cook and stir until vegetables begin to soften, about 5 minutes. Add beef and sausage. Cook and stir until meat is no longer pink. Break up any large pieces of meat as its cooking. Add Italian seasoning and fennel seeds and cook 1 more minute. Add tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper. Bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in basil and remove from heat. Serve sauce over hot, cooked pasta.
