Brian Reager February 6, 2011 Writing 102: NYC Narratives Proffesor Jennifer Cho Reflection on bell hooks Teachings

3-5

I would have to agree with bell hooks on Teaching 3. This area focuses on the building of a community in the classroom. She explains As teachers, we can create a climate for optimal learning if we understand the level of emotional awareness and emotional intelligence in the classroom. In order to get through to ones students I feel like you need to get to know them first. Where they are in their views and how you can help them to understand the views of others. Bell hooks refers to the mood in the classroom as the climate you set. This I find to be extremely truthful. If its cold outside nobody wants to walk to work, some people may even skip. However if its warm and sunny with just the right amount of breeze, some people will enjoy the walk and maybe even go out of their way to leave early to work. The same can easily be said about students in the classroom. Also in Teaching 5, bell hooks focuses on integrity and keeping in mind that a teachers only goal should be to educate the truth, and not to help feed into whatever society sets the standards for in education.

Teachers should encourage their students to ask questions about social injustices and they should also ask why people did the things they did. A population that stops asking questions ceases to attain its independence.
