‘SUCCESSFUL MARKETING’
VOICE OVER/ 23RD JAN 08/ ANOUK/ CIM

A POSITIVE SIGN IN SRI LANKA, SAY THOSE IN-THE-KNOW, IS

THAT MARKETING IS CATCHING UP FAST AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF
BUSINESS ACTIVITY, AS A STRATEGIC DIRECTION RATHER THAN A
FUNCTIONAL COMPONENT.

VOICE CUT
(03:14)
IF YOU TAKE ACROSS THE BOARD ALL THE SUCCESSFUL COMPANIES
OR EVEN THE TOP 50 COMPANIES IN SRI LANKA ALL OF THEM ARE
HEAVILY MARKETING-ORIENTED, AND MOST OF THEM WILL HAVE
MARKETERS IN THEIR BOARDROOMS
(3:30)

YET HE NOTES THAT DESPITE THIS, WHEN TOUGH TIMES HIT

CERTAIN BUSINESS, IT IS MOST OFTEN THE MARKETING DEPARTMENT
THAT BEARS THE BRUNT OF THE FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS AS BUDGET
CUTS ARE ADMINISTERED.

AS SUCH, HE SAYS CIM IS MAKING AN EFFORT TO PROMOTE THE

CONCEPT OF ‘MARKETING ACCOUNTABILITY’ WHERE MARKETING IS
PROMOTED AS AN INVESTMENT.

VOICE CUT
(06:10)
YOU PROMOTE YOUR INVESTMENT IN ADVERTISING AND ALL OTHER
PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES IN RELATION TO THE RETURNS. NOW IF
YOU’RE INVESTING SO MUCH OF DOLLARS OR RUPEES INTO CREATING
MARKET SHARE, ETC., WHAT IS THE RETURN YOU GET, SO THERE
SHOULD BE A MATRIX TO IDENTIFY THE DELIVERABLES YOU GET
FROM THE INVESTMENT (6:33)

HE SAYS THAT A SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGE IN THE MARKETING

SECTOR IN SRI LANKA IS THAT THE TERM ‘MARKETING’ IS USED
LOOSELY TO EVEN ENCOMPASS SALES STAFF, THEREBY ALTERING THE
SCOPE OF THE DISCIPLINE WITHIN AN ORGANIZATION.

HE ADDS THAT FURTHER HINDRANCES EXIST TO THE PROGRESSION OF

MARKETING WITHIN CORPORATE INSTITUTIONS DUE TO UNQUALIFIED
MARKETING PERSONNEL WORKING IN THE FIELD.

LATIFF HOWEVER NOTES THAT MOST OFTEN YOUNG EXECUTIVES

EMBARKING ON A CAREER IN MARKETING REFRAIN FROM OBTAINING A
RECOGNIZED QUALIFICATION OF GIVE UP THEIR STUDIES IN
MARKETING BEFORE COMPLETION DUE TO FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS OR
A LACK OF KNOWLEDGE IN ENGLISH WHICH IS THE LANGUAGE IN
WHICH THESE COURSES AND EXAMS ARE HELD.

HE SAYS THAT THE CIM SRI LANKA REGION IS NOW ATTEMPTING TO

RECTIFY THE SITUATION.

VOICE CUT
(9:10)
WE’RE TRYING TO INTRODUCE AN INTRODUCTORY CERTIFICATE IN
MARKETING WHICH WILL BE TARGETED AT THE STUDENTS WHO HAVE
JUST COMPLETED THEIR O/L’S, THEY MIGHT NOT NEED A GOOD
UNDERSTANDING OF ENGLISH, A FAIR KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH IS
FINE, BUT AT THE SAME TIME WE WILL GIVE OUR TUITION CENTERS
TO SUPPORT THEM BY GIVING GOOD COACHING IN ENGLISH AND
THERE WILL BE A SIX MONTHS COURSE WHERE THEY WILL BE ABLE
TO GET SOME KIND OF AN APPRECIATION IN THE MARKETING
DISCIPLINE (9:42)

THE COURSE, HE SAYS, IS A COMPUTER-BASED PROGRAM THAT WILL

BE DELIVERED ACROSS TUITION CENTERS THROUGHOUT THE ISLAND,
MAKING A MARKETING QUALIFICATION MORE ACCESSIBLE TO
STUDENTS.
