ANDHRA PRADESH
Name : Y. SARATH BABU
Designation : Lecturer in ECE
Branch : ECE
Institute : GMR. Polytechnic, Gajwel.
Semester : DECE - I year
Subject : Electronic Components & Devices
Code : EC-105
Topic : Capacitor
Duration : 50 mins.

Teaching aids : PPT’sEC105.39 1
OBJECTIVE

On completion of this period you would be able to

learn

• Energy Stored in a capacitor

b) Second Method

RECAP

In previous class we discussed about

• Energy Stored in a capacitor

first Method

EC105.39 3
Known to Unknown

• What are passive components.

• What is the function of a capacitor.

• Give the equation for the energy stored in a

capacitor

EC105.39 4
Energy stored in a capacitor

b) Second Method:

• Consider a capacitor of capacitance ‘C’ Farads

charged from a voltage source of ‘V’ volts.

• For constant capacitance ‘C’, V∝ Q

EC105.39 6
• Hence the graph between V and Q is straight line
passing through the origin as shown in figure.

• The energy required to charge the capacitor with ‘Q’

coulombs for a potential difference of ‘V’ volts is given
by the area of the triangle ‘OAB’, which is equal to ½
(base x height).

EC105.39 7
Therefore

• Energy stored = ½ QV Joules

= ½ CV2 Joules [because Q=CV]

= Q2/2C Joules [because V=Q/C]

SUMMARY

b) Energy stored in a capacitor

w = ½ cv2

or w = ½ QV

or w = Q2/2C
