A garden of Eden

Magnum Opus I wrest for control of the brush. Others want to spoil it -with murky strokes of brown and grey and smudges forming a ghastly black smell of oil This is not mine. This is theirs. I seize a new brush and start afresh attacking back Splashes of blue and Bursts of green Of the soul, the smell of fresh air waters blue (no rainbows caused artificially) earth untainted by poisons that burn and bleed Exhibition hall in it sits: may others be inspired to paint as such as I have done. This is my legacy Let it be yours.

Judges comment: A clear winner. This poem stands out from the rest in a number of ways: 1 The image of Mother Earth as a painter grappling with humanity trying to spoil her canvas is striking and original. 2 The language is plain, simple, and effective. It doesnt make the mistake (as quite a few of the poems here do) of deploying overtly poetic language as an end in itself. Instead, the plain language here becomes the natural medium for the poetic impulse. 3 The verse form is expertly handled for example, lines are thoughtfully constructed to foreground ideas and images 4 The tone is understated, but very effectively conveys the idea of a struggle going on between the forces of Nature trying to restore the natural order of things, and Man smudging the bright clarity of Nature with his murky strokes.
