    Sotheby’s London 127-lot sale this afternoon of works by Alexander Benois from an Important Private Collection was 100% sold by lot and by value, and concluded achieving a total of £1,997,225 ($3,101,491), almost double pre-sale high expectations (est. £805,500-£1,100,000). Commenting on the outstanding results achieved for this remarkable collection, Sabina Tringalas, Deputy Director and Specialist in Sotheby’s Russian Art Department, said: “We are delighted with the results established for this remarkable collection, which almost doubled the total high estimate, and achieved the status of a “white-glove sale” with its sell-through rate of 100%. The appearance of this group at auction represented the largest collection of works by Benois to be offered for sale in recent history and the results achieved today are testament to the one-off opportunity it presented to collectors to acquire fresh-to-the-market artworks in this field.” The top-selling lot of the sale was the Set Design for Act II of Le Rossignol, 1914, which depicts the Emperor’s Palace. The set design sold for the exceptional sum of £235,250 ($365,320), almost five times its pre-sale high estimate (est. £30,000-50,000) and established a new auction record for a set design by Benois. This lot was one of many works in the collection that sold for multiples of their pre-sale estimates. The collection featured exquisite works on paper spanning the artist’s lifetime and artistic oeuvre, comprising ballet and opera set and costume designs, watercolour views of Russia, France and Italy, book illustrations, sketchbooks, and portraits of the artist’s family.
