Parasitic Draw

What is a Parasitic Draw? When a Hyundai vehicle is shut down, there is a Timeout in which various vehicle controllers will stay on and then shut down. This Timeout period is usually no more than four minutes after shut-down or key-off. (The Genesis Timeout period is close to four minutes.) The Amperage Draw that exists after the Timeout period is called vehicle parasitic draw.

Note: As a general rule, on Hyundai vehicles, Parasitic Amperage Note: As a general rule, on Hyundai vehicles, Parasitic Amperage Draw should never exceed 0.035 Amps or 35 milliamps. Draw should never exceed 0.035 Amps or 35 milliamps.

Parasitic Draw
Preparation for a Parasitic Draw Test
First make sure the ignition is off, the key is out of the ignition, doors are closed, and all accessories and lighting are off. (Make sure the Timeout Period of four minutes has expired.) If equipped, make sure the Hood Switch is depressed. Locate the battery and identify the negative post/terminal of the battery. Make sure the battery post and terminal are clean.

The battery post And the battery terminal

1. Be sure the Hood Switch is depressed. 2. While keeping the DVOM probes attached, switch the DVOM to DC amps.

Parasitic Draw
Diagnosing a Parasitic Draw
To diagnose a Parasitic Draw that is beyond the standard value of 35 milliamps, start by setting the range of your DVOM to 300 milliamps. Then begin to pull fuses one at a time, and note the milliamp drop. When the amperage draw reading falls below the standard value, that is the circuit that is causing the excess draw. For example, lets say you pull the 20A fuse for the Door Locks on a 2009 Sonata and the condition disappears. First look at the circuit using the ETM (Next Slide).

Re-install the DR Lock 20A Fuse and disconnect the BCM and re-check the Parasitic Amperage Draw. If the condition disappears, then you may need to check the BCM and its related circuits. (Remember the Door Lock Relay and the Door Unlock Relay are integrated in the Junction Box).

If the amperage draw does not drop below the standard value, then confirm the draw is not in the Junction Box.

Parasitic Amperage Draw Review
A Parasitic Amperage Draw is defined as the amount of amperage draw with ignition off after a four minute Timeout. The standard Parasitic Amperage Draw value for Hyundai vehicles is less than 35 milliamps. It is recommended that the Parasitic Amperage Draw Test be performed on the negative terminal of the battery. If the Parasitic Amperage Draw exceeds the standard value, start by pulling fuses one at a time to isolate the circuit. Use the Applicable ETM to help isolate the source of the Parasitic Amperage Draw.
