Selinker (1980) proposes the Interlanguage Theory wherein the learners construct their own grammatical systems. He maintains that in a given situation, the word produced by the learners are different from the native speakers would produce had they attempted to convey the same meaning. 2. Cummins (2000) advances the theory that there is a common underlying proficiency between the two languages where the skills, ideas, and concepts students learn in their first language will be transferred to the second language.
