Mauch will always be expected of us in

NDRMMC, AFP to the Rescue
[As we go to press for this issue of the Philippine Defense Newsletter,
at least 1,260 residents of ligan City, Cagayan de Oro City and Dumaguete
City were reportedly dead, with countless number of people still missing as an
‘aftermath of Tropical Storm Sendong (T:S. Washi) passing through Northern
Mindanao and South Central Visayas on the night of December 17, 2011,
Floods caused by heavy rains brought about by Sendong swept away
homes, entire villages and nearly wiping out entire families.
‘The impact of Sendong is an added reminder to all of us that we must al-
ways be extra vigilant and keen on weather conditions and to be prepared
inthe event of a disaster or catastrophe. Disasters know neither boundar-
les, norit recognizes events that humanity commemorates, This latest disas-
ter rendered almost a million residents homeless and near despondent.
The Filipino people's generosity, compassion and spirt of Christmas rallied
countless communities and individuals to share their blessings to the residents
of these affected areas. In a matter of days, relief poured into Cagayan de Oro,
ligan and Dumaguete - another proof of the Fiipinos' “Bayanihan’” sprit.
The Office of Civil Defense - National Disaster Risk Reduction Manage-
ment Council (OCD-NDRRMC) continued to work overtime in coordinating
and extending inter-agency, public-private assistance to the victims and sur-
Vivors of the calamity.
‘The Philippine Army's 4th Infantry Division (41D) was the fist on-site
to render rescue and relief services along with the the Philippine Air Force's
