MONITORING & MEASUREMENT y This involves the use of a computer or microprocessor based devices monitor or measure physical variables

over a period of time. y Sensors are used in this scenario to measure physical variables eg temperature, pressure, humidity, moisture, light, sound, blood pressure and pH(acidity). y Motoring and measuring systems record data for the purpose of enabling users to identify trends in the patterns of changing data. y The computer is continually monitoring the sensors. Sensors send data continually, not just when a certain event happens eg a sudden increase in temperature. y Data logging systems are used to record the results and interpret them generally. MEDICALLY APPLICATION y Patient monitoring systems are used in ICU s in hospitals. y Sensors are connected to the patient and then the computer. y Many variables are fed back to the computer eg. Pulse rate, rate of breathing, blood pressure, body temperature and the amount of oxygen in the blood. WEATHER MONITORING y Concerns with the monitoring of weather to warn the public or authorities of very high levels of pollutants eg the level of nitrous oxide, sulphur dioxide, ozone etc y Noise levels are also monitored in some cities. Rivers are monitored measuring different variables eg stream temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and water level. y Turbidity is the cloudiness of a liquid caused by individual particles usually invisible to the naked eye.
