Assignment 1-4-1 Topical Review: Graphic Design

Create a layout demonstrating the principles and elements of graphic design. Elements of Design a. i. Line - a mark connecting 2 points. ii. Shape - geometric, abstract or symbolic. Line defines a shape. 1. 2. 3 basic shapes Circle a. b. Square c. Triangle Texture - How a surface looks or feels. iii. Tangible texture - Texture you actual can touch. Visual texture - texture you can sense. iv. Point - a geometric element with zero dimensions and a location determinable by an ordered set of coordinates Euclid (325 625 BC). gives precise location Euclid (325 625 BC). Points size or dots primary help in navigation for accessing specific information in design layout. For instance, Google map layout show specific location by points. Point contributes in creating gradients, tone, value, and halftones in graphic design. A point can communicate a multitude of visual meanings.

Principles of Design i. Balance - equal distance of weight. Symmetrical - each part has a matching part. 1. 2. Asymmetrical - balance through difference. ii. Rhythm - a pattern that is created by repeating elements. Repetition - repeating the same element. 1. 2. Variation - varying elements. Unity - the organization of elements in a design to create an overall look (branding). iii. iv. Visual Hierarchy - giving an element a point of emphasis or making it a focal point. This helps organize the elements and information from important to not important. 1. Focal Point - main subject of the design. The area the user should look first. a. Accent - elements that support the focal point. Dominant - an object that takes up most of the focal point. . Achieved by size, color, relationship, etc. a. The object the user should see first. Subdominant - the object second to the dominant object. . The object that the dominant object should lead the users eye towards next. Subordinate - the smallest object on the page. . The object the user should see last. v. Figure/Ground - This is the relationship between the page and the objects on the page. AKA positive vs. negative space. Stable relationship - where the relationship is clearly defined. What is the object and what is the ground.

Reversible relationship - Where either the object or the ground can be seed as the figure or the ground. Ambiguous relationship - Where it is unclear as to which is the figure and which is the ground. vi. Tension - emphasis that is placed on one specific area that causes an uncomfortableness at another area. Example - squeezing letters together. vii. Contrast - the extremes of two elements. Can be achieved with color, shape and font sizing (big vs. small, tall vs. short). High contrast - Black and white. Low contrast - circle vs. oval, black and grey, rectangle vs. square. viii. Flow - Creating the feeling of movement by placement of objects and text. Leading the users eye from one area to another. Reading left to right, top to bottom is an example of flow. ix. Scale/Proportion - is the relative degree of size, amount, importance and rank in a work of art.

Objective or Literal Scale demonstrates the actual dimensions of a physical object in relationship to the objects graphical representation. For instance, using ration scale such as 1:50. Subjective Scale demonstrates the persons impression of a definite object in regards to self experience.

Typography the ability of organizing typeface visually convey or communicate a given message. What makes typography importance in the design? The unique appealing characteristics of a text which help in emphasizing message content to target the intended audience. The picking of the type for a design requires thorough analysis to avoid illegibility, grotesque accidents, and miscommunication. The important thing to remember, the link between the typography and the nature of the publication should make visual sense.
