VIS 1- SECTION A03- Matt Savitsky WEEK EIGHT/ Art and Site Specificity DUE / Wednesday, November 23rd,

2011 The last lecture was about art that directly addresses the space in which it exists. We saw this in that way that murals conform to the architecture of the institutions they comment upon. In the case of Robert Smithson and Gordon Matt Clark, artworks become actual sites wherein our bodies are enveloped by larger, manmade environments. Graffiti artists tag public property as a reflection of human hand and life force located within the urban landscape. For this project I would like you to create a site-specific artwork. You may do this in one of two ways. 1. Make a work that directly addresses the courtyard outside our classroom. You may also consider an area that is very close by. 2. OR- Document some kind of public intervention somewhere off campus. Ask yourself these questions: How does the space feel? How could I simply alter the way this space feels/functions? How is this space used and by whom? Which areas of this space are interesting to me? Thanks guys. Good luck!
