JAWAHARLAL COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY VII SEMESTER B.

TECH AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING SECOND SERIES TEST AN04 705(A) THEORY OF ELASTICITY Time: 90 minutes Maximum: 50Marks PART A 1. Explain about membrane analogy. 2. Derive an expression for the equation of equilibrium in 2D polar coordinates. 3. Consider the stress function =Ax2+Bxy+Cy2. Evaluate elastic constants A, B, C & D for a rectangular beam. 4. Derive the governing equation for a plane stress problem in terms of Airy's stress function and body force components. (4X5=20 MARKS) PART B 5. (a) A cantilever of length L and depth 2h is in a state of plane stress. The cantilever is of unit thickness and is rigidly supported at the end x=L and is loaded as shown in fig.

Show that the stress function is valid and = Ax2+Bx2y+Cy3+D(5x2y3-y5) and evaluate the constans. OR (b) Derive the governing equation and the boundary condition for non circular section subjected to torque load. Use Prandtl stress function approach. 6 (a) Explain about saint venants theory. OR (b) =3Qxy/4a-Qxy3/4a3 airys stress function over a square region x=-a to x= a , y=-a to y=a. calculate the stress resultants per unit thickness over each boundary of the region. (2x15=30Marks)
