Chapter I INTRODUCTION Background of the Study Nurses are expected to be competent. More than any health professional, the nurse interact with the patient mostly and does procedures independently, dependently and collaboratively. Nursing activities include the following: providing direct care to the ill person such as administering medication, baths and specific procedures and treatments; performing diagnostics and assessment procedures, such as measuring blood pressure and examining feces for occult blood; consulting with other health care professionals about clients problem; teaching clients about recovery activities such as exercises that will accelerate recovery; rehabilitating clients to their optimal functional level following physical or mental illness, injury or chemical addiction. (Kozier and Erbs, 2007) But prior to these, nurses, upon graduating from their respective colleges, must take the Nurse Licensure Examination and pass. This will determine whether 4 years of studying has given him confidence and competence to provide quality nursing care. As the years passed by, Nursing became the most sought after course for many students. As the Philippine nursing schools boomed in number, other courses declined. About 470 schools in May 2006 opened, while 370 in April 2004, 257 schools in June 2003 vs. 170 schools in 1990 and 40 in 1970 (BON as cited by Macaranas, 2006 from the research work of __________________). In 1995, College of Nursing was established and became one of the courses offered by the City University of Pasay formerly Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasay. As the school started to produce graduates, it has acquired the ff. board rating. With these issues and documented result in the NLE performance of the school as a whole, some questions are formed. Does this mean that nursing school must have a new Curriculum? Should nursing schools be stricter with their students to have a 100% board passing rate? Due to these circumstances, the researches would like to determine the factors that could have affected the performance of the board-takers from 2010 to 2011 in City University of Pasay for acquiring such results in the NLE.

Hopefully, this study will be of use for the improvement and better performance of future board- takers and the school.
