EXPERIENCES OF LACK OF SLEEP AMONG LEVEL THREE NURSING STUDENTS IN RELATION TO THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE Eupia, Brigette Mae,

Ga, Sienna Diunne, Lagarto, Cindy ,Manga, Anne Janice Stahley, Jean Rose, Tagadiad, Francis Leo Abstract The study was conducted at Liceo de Cagayan University, College of Nursing located at the Kauswagan Carmen junction, Rodolfo N. Pelaez Boulevard, Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City. The study aimed to recognize whether academic performance of the Nursing Students in LDCU is affected by their quality of sleep. If utilized the descriptive and correlational type of research to know the quality of sleep among the Level 3 Nursing students under the new curriculum. A questionnaire was used as the research instrument used to gather data. Academic performance in terms of grades and attendance were determined and lastly, the relationship between the quality of sleep and academic performance was determined statistically. Twenty - Eight respondents who are enrolled during the second semester 20102011, 15 from the N103 and another 13 for the N104/N105, and were chosen randomly. Lack of affected the academic performance of majority of the level III Nursing students wherein the reasons commonly cited were about the many requirements, busy schedule, hospital duties, return demonstrations and poor time management. Moreover, feeling of physical and mental tiredness, loss of concentration and easily distracted, and lack of interest and self-confidence in class were the most common effects of lack of sleep among the third year Nursing students. Lack of sleep was significantly the reason for the poor academic performance of the N105 level III Nursing students. Other aspects such as psychological, social, spiritual and financial were insignificantly related. For the rest of the levels, lack of sleep is insignificant to all of the aspects mentioned.
