MEMENTO
Directed by: Christopher Nolan

Memento is about a man who suffers from a mental disability similar to short term memory loss, he uses Tattoos, pictures and notes in order to track down the man he believes has killed his wife.

About Memento

Often in Thriller films, the protagonist will have an exploitable weakness, which the antagonist can take advantage of in this case it is his memory loss condition. Lenny is taken advantage of by Natalie. In the opening scene the audience witness an enigma (a person or thing that is mysterious and difficult to understand) I believe that the theme has embodied the idea of an enigma though out the film.

What makes Memento a Thriller?

Name: Lenny Often in Thriller films the protagonist is presented as a character with a weakness, in Memento Lennys weakness is his memory loss disorder which makes it easier for people to take advantage of him and use him. Throughout the majority of the movie, Lenny is stuck in the thick of Natalies web. This is shown through Natalie attempting to make Lenny get rid of Dodd and turn him against Teddy. The theme of identity is key in this Thriller as it is based around Lenny not knowing who he is, and living everyday as an intruder in his own life.

Protagonist: Lenny

Natalie is the antagonist in the film who manages to get Lenny to get rid of Dodd even though Lennys soul purpose was to find his wives killer. Natalie manipulated Lenny because she understood the extent of his memory condition and she knew that he was an easy target to get rid of Todd, Natalie conforms to the idea of a traditional antagonist in a Thriller film as she easily has Lenny where she wants him, in a state of vulnerability and trust.

Antagonist: Natalie

The use of sophisticated editing such as discontinuity editing (the film doesnt run in chronological order) Constant flashbacks (cuts to his phone calls in black and white)
