The Great Paper Airplane Contest


DAY 1:

Create a group of 2-4 students, make sure you record the names of all your group members in your field book.

Use a piece of colored paper for your cover and at least 4 sheets of graph paper for the inside.

Assign everyone a specific job (jobs may include: designer, engineer, builder, recorder, idea person, mediator or any other role you may need on your team). Record everyone's jobs in your field book.

BUILD A PLANE

Record your design, procedures and building instructions in your field book. Make sure your plane has distinguishing marks! Test your plane for both AIR TIME and DISTANCE. How long can your plane stay in the air? How far can it fly?

TEST YOUR PLANE

Explain how you tested these factors and record your data in your field book. Think of a way to improve your plane or your testing methods. Record your idea in your field book. Complete at least 3 more trials to test your planes time and distance. Make an improvement each trial and record absolutely everything in your field book!

IN YOUR FIELD BOOK:


You will need to record EVERYTHING in your field book! Include sketches of your design and answers to all of the questions listed to the right ->.

CLASS AIRPLANE COMPETITION


As a class, we will need to create a way to test different planes in three different categories. We will be testing in the following divisions: 1. 2. 3. LONGEST DISTANCE LONGEST HANG TIME MOST WEIGHT CARRIED Your group will need to create a plane for each category and devise a way to test each division; what will the rules be and how will we measure each category? All of your ideas, plane designs and category rules should be recorded in your field book. THERE WILL BE PRIZES AWARDED IN EVERY CATEGORY 4.
