Too Heavy, Too Young

Date:

1. Aged 16, Lloyd Lamb, a 10th grader, already knows a thing or two about cruelty or loneliness. He is bright and outgoing. He plays golf and wrestles. He is also 170cm, weighs 91kg, and at times suffers the critical remarks of classmates. Although Lamb works hard to ignore them, there are moments, he himself admits, when he gets depressed and lonely. There must be a lot of lonely kids in America these days, judging from the high rate of childhood obesity. 2. Overweight children are likely to have high blood pressure or heart disease. Even more alarming is the number of children with Type 2 diabetes that puts kids at risk for adult illnesses. For example, they may, as adults, suffer from blindness, nerve damage, kidney failure, and cardiovascular disease. 3. What can parents do to protect their children from the danger of excess weight? A lot, especially if they start early before kids get into the habit of eating high-fat and high-sugar foods and out of the habit of exercising regularly. Parents should learn to serve appropriate portions. They should also limit the amount of treats and junk food in the house, including soda and fruit juice. 4. American children are getting less exercise than ever before partly because they spend much time watching television and playing computer and video games. According to a recent report, kids between the ages of 2 and 11 watch an average of 20 hours of TV per week. Obesity experts recommend that parents remove the television from their childrens rooms and set strict limits on time spent in front of a screen, including the computer. 5. Once a child has gained too much weight, its time to get outside help. Many parents turn to weight-loss camps for kids. Camp can seem like the answer, especially when an overweight child comes home as much as 15kg lighter. Lloyd Lamb attends a camp, where he has learned to look at labels of food for fat contents and to walk after meals. He lost 12kg last summer. His parents themselves have also learned to follow a healthier diet. 6. If parents want to protect their kids from obesity, they need, without hesitation, to look beyond the home to their childrens schools. Hundreds of schools have placed soft-drink vending machines in school hallways and opened their cafeterias to fast food. 7. Parents can try to change some of these things, but lasting behavioral change cannot be imposed from the outside. These are internal battles and will ultimately have to be fought by the kids themselves. Part One: Reading comprehension A. Choose the correct answer. (1 pts.) 1.
