Hearing the Voice Of God is the story of how one man's dream of seeing young people impact the nations by sharing the good news of Jesus Christ became Youth With A Mission, widely known as YWAM, an inter-denominational and international Christian missions organization. It shares the amazing journey that Loren Cunningham and his wife Darlene shared in discerning God's voice and trusting in His direction. In his book, Cunningham shares both the trials and triumphs of seeing God turn his dream from vision into reality. He shares that the most important tool one could have is to be able to discern the voice of God personally. The reliance on others to have your redeemed relationship with God was unacceptable to Cunningham. In each tale he also draws attention to how God guided him, making the book a little manual of guidance principles.

Critique From beginning to end the book is filled with such inspiring and informative anecdotes. The writing is smooth and non-intrusive with, at the end of each chapter, a little hook that keeps one reading just one more chapter, and one more. Id suggest reading it with a highlighter in hand, though, so that later youll easily be able to find the wisdom about Gods guidance that is sprinkled throughout. I can see this book being especially attractive to the young person who wants to be challenged to live a radical, sold out to God life. But I would also recommend it as a powerful little hearing aid for the Christian of any age. Loren Cunningham's book has become mandatory reading for all students desiring to attend any YWAM school or course, and with good reason. It not only sheds light on YWAM's humble beginnings, but also how it all started with one young man willing to hear God to speak to Him. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever questioned if God speaks to us today, or for those looking for some encouragement in listening to God.

The important lesson that Cunningham conveys through his testimony is that although God is delighted in obedience and victories, it is ultimately our relationship with Him that pleases Him most: "Guidance is first of all, the relationship with the Guide." This practical guide to hearing God's voice shows how an ordinary man who committed to hearing God and obeying Him, became the founder of the largest interdenominational missions organization in the world. Loren Cunningham's dream began with a vision -- waves of young people moving out across the continents announcing the Good News of Jesus Christ to the whole earth. Decades later, Loren's vision has grown into an interdenominational movement of Christians from around the world who are dedicated to presenting the Gospel to this generation. The more you seek to hear Gods voice in detail, the more effective you will be in your own calling. Practice hearing Gods voice and it becomes easier. Relationship is the most important reason for hearing the voice of the Lord. God is not only infinite but personal. If you dont have communication, you dont have a personal relationship with Him. True guidance, as Darlene pointed out, is getting closer to the Guide. We grow to know the Lord better as He speaks to us and as we listen to Him and obey, we make His heart glad.
