Family Literacy Curriculum!


The JumpStart Family Literacy Curriculum is an interdisciplinary learning program for children, families, and adult learners. The curriculum contains appealing, handson materials for exploring ten highinterest concepts and topics: food, dreams, myths, special days, family traditions, time, traditional stories, and others. The cross cultural, activitybased curriculum helps learners of all ages to Sprouting Seeds expand their general knowledge, to develop basic literacy skills, and to deepen appreciation for their own and others' Food for Thought cultural traditions.

JumpStart Themes: Each of JumpStart's ten themes develops a cross-cultural concept or topic through active learning strategies. Each theme links activities for adults, children and families. The themes can be used in any order. Activities are structured to integrate learning in six disciplines: Language and Literacy, Social Studies, Scientific Reasoning, Mathematical Reasoning, The Arts, and Learning with Others. Easytofollow instructions for completing an activity are provided. Adult Activities are flexible and can be used by adults in basic and advanced literacy classes or independently, by adults at home. Projects encourage selfdirected learning, critical thinking, and problem solving strategies. The emphasis in all projects is on basic reading and writing, research, and effective use of

community resources. Each adult section includes a GED focused activity. instructions are easy to follow for either the teacher or the adult learner.

Activity

Family Activities: Children and their families work, play, and learn together. Each experience builds parent and child knowledge and skills, and models an effective learning approach. Instructions are easy to follow and easy to modify to suit family interests and skill levels. Child Activities are developmentally appropriate and build on children's natural eagerness to explore and understand the world around them.
