Introduction: When you are reading a text, picking out the 5Ws (who, what, when, where and why) and 1H (how) will help you identify the most important information. Teaching suggestions for initial use: 1. If students will be looking at a particular text, activate their prior knowledge by asking them what they know about the topic. 2. You can have students work in pairs or small groups to find and discuss the texts 5Ws and 1H. 3. After students answer the question at the bottom of the page, have some of them share their opinions and insights. Teaching suggestions for repeated uses: 1. Model finding the 5Ws and 1H with a sample text. 2. Students can copy the chart from the board or overhead to save on photocopying.
