Zafar 1 Haider Zafar Bultmann Music 20A 1st December 2011 Concert Review Concert #1: Fleet Foxes

Performing for a packed house at the Greek Theatre, Fleet Foxes were at their very best. The band used a variety of different instruments ranging from the standard guitars and drums to saxophones and triangles. Robin Pecknold, the lead singer, and his band played songs in a diverse set of pitches; from standard tuning in their song white winter hymnal to a very unusual (at least for me) drop C tuning in their song lorelai . Playing all their new releases coupled with the best songs from their first album, Fleet Foxes performed a well thought out set-list with a great mix of slow ballads and alternative songs edging on the brink of rock. The alternative band from Seattle put up an excellent show that the entire crowd seemed to enjoy a great deal. Because of their awesome concert I am now eagerly awaiting the release of their new album.

Concert #2: Javanese and Balinese Gamelan and Dance The Javanese and Balinese Gamelans had an assortment of percussion instruments that sounded like bells and chimes and seemed to sound closer to wind instruments than percussion instruments. The different ringing and chiming mixed together to form a very interesting and slightly bluesy sound. With an ensemble of more than 20 people playing different beats on their respective percussion instruments there was a very sweet amalgamation of all the different sounds.

Zafar 2 Playing a standard, what seemed to be, a four by four beat the entire ensemble put up a very entertaining performance. The Javanese ensemble was accompanied by a single, fancy looking string instrument who s sound resembled that of a violin. In a total of 5 tracks the Balinese ensemble played 3 and the Javanese ensemble played 2 in alteration.

P.S The Javanese and Balinese Gamelan and Dance concert was part of the 58th Annual Noon Concert Series so it was a free concert and there was no ticket. I have attached the programme and will also email/show the picture I took at the concert.
