Whitney Houston, Regal
Superstar of Music
Whitney Houston, the gospel-inspired pop
singer who sold more than 140million albums
with her emotive renditions of such hits as
"Greatest Love of All" and "I Will Always Love
You," and who struggled with drug abuse and
a troubled marriage, died Feb. 11 in Beverly
Hills, Calif. She was 48.
A police official told Press that Ms. Houston
was pronounced dead Saturday afternoon in
her room at the Beverly Hilton hotel and that
no signs of "criminal intent" had been found.
Ms. Houston was scheduled to attend a gala at
the hotel on the eve of Sundays Grammy
Awar ds pr ogr am. The par t y had been
organized by Clive Davis, the record executive
who discovered her in the mid-1980s.
With a choir-trained voice of vast power and
brilliant tone, Ms. Houston, the winner of six
Grammys, was widely recognized as one of
the greatest pop vocalists. She was cited as a
major influence on such top-selling artists as
Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Mary J.
Blige, Boyz II Men and Beyonce, as well as the
many "American Idol" contestants who tried to
mimic her seemingly infinite vocal range.
Ms. Houston was 22 when her debut album,
"Whitney Houston," was released in 1985. By
Two Legend Singer, Michael Jackson
and Whitney Houston
1986, it had sold more than 5 million copies,
topping sales records set by Tina Turner and
Donna Summer.
With her "fire-and-steel voice," Ms. Houston
made "commercial ballads .?.?. transcend
romantic cliches to become hymns of faith in a
love that goes beyond the secular," New York
Times music critic Stephen Holden wrote of
the album.
She was quickly recognized as the obvious
and rightful successor to pop-gospel stars
such as Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick.
To many observers of the entertai nment
industry, it was only fitting, if not foreordained,
that Ms. Houston should attain such stature.
She was born into musical aristocracy. Gospel
singer Cissy Houston was her mother and
Franklin was her godmother.
Cissy Houston was the choirmaster at the
Bapti st church in New Jersey where Ms.
Ho us t o n mad e h er ea r l i es t p ub l i c
appearances. Cissy Houston also had sung
backup to Franklin and other prominent soul
artists of the time.
For Ms. Houston, Franklin was a role model.
The older singer "brought such great emotion
to her music," Ms. Houston once told an
interviewer. "I wanted to make people feel the
same way about my music."
At the outset of her career, Ms. Houston
distinguished herself from pop stars whose
renown seemed to spring, at least in part, from
their wild-child behavior. She achieved her
greatest popularity in the 1980s and early
1990s wi th i nspi rati onal and someti mes
sentimental selecti ons about overcoming
adversi t y and undyi ng romant i c l oyal t y.
One of t he songs on her debut al bum,
"Greatest Love of All," by Michael Masser and
Linda Creed, remained a staple throughout her
career. "No matter what they take from me,"
goes the songs memorable lyric, "they cant
take away my dignity.
The Grammy's host launched the awards
ceremony with a moving prayer and
dedication, before even welcoming the
audience to the show. Jennifer Hudson gave a
stunning and emotional performance to " I will
Always Love You".

UP Politics
Is Modi Dispensable?
By: Laxmi Patel, Ahmadabad, India
Absence of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra
Modi from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)
campaign for the ongoing assembly polls has
led to all kinds of speculation on why he has
kept away and whether it was his way of
get t i ng back at t he RSS l eadershi p f or
inducting his main detractor Sanjay Joshi in
the Saffron Brigades battle to regain Uttar
Pradesh in particular. There is no doubt that a
large section of BJP workers view Modi as
their strongest leader but Modis magic has
never been really put to test outside Gujarat. In
the few elections where he campaigned, the
BJP has not done too well and where it came
t o powe r , i t was mor e t o do wi t h
anti-incumbency or the local leaderships
ability to organize the polls.
Modi has been abl e t o wi n successi ve
elections in Gujarat essentially because of his
el ectoral strategy ie polarizi ng voters on
community lines. He has tall ambitions of
launching himself on the national centre stage
but has decided to put his plans in abeyance
because he feels that he will be better placed
once he gets Gujarat for the BJP one more
time at the end of this year when the polls are
due. No BJP Chief Minister has so far won
three successive assembly polls and if Modi
achieves that he will be in a very good position
to dictate terms. But before that happens,
politics may change at a very rapid pace and
who knows what kind of situation exists by
December end.
As st at ed earl i er, Modi has never been
successful outside Gujrat and I do not think
that the BJP is missing him much in Uttar
Pradesh where the only other mass leader of
the party, Uma Bharti is spearheading the
campaign with more seasoned leaders playing
second fiddle to her. The problem, with Uma is
that after being ditched by the BJP in Madhya
Pradesh where she led them to victory in
2003, there is no certainty that she will be not
be left high and dry once again once the
results are out and even if the BJP performs
better than what most people think.
Modi I think knows that he should not venture
into the uncertainties of UP politics as the star
campaigner because his detractors will put the
partys defeat on his shoulders. He must also
be thinking that UP would also prove to be the
undoing of Uma Bharti and he, as the sole
mass leader of the BJP subsequently will have
all the cards in his favour. It does not matter to
Modi that his mass appeal is on account of his
polarizing and divisive abilities (unlike the
appeal of Uma which is wider). Therefore, it
would be better to remain busy in Gujarat
rat her be l abel ed as among those who
campaigned in UP but were unable to make
any difference for the party. Modi is a political
person and thus has calibrated his moves very
well.
He is trying to present a fait accomplii to the
RSS once all the Saffron leaders put together
fail to regain UP and thus emerge as the sole
savi or at the end of t he year. The onl y
miscalculation he seems to have done is that a
mid-term poll at the Centre could take place
before the Gujarat assembly polls and thus his
t i mi ng can sl i ght l y get muddl ed up.
The Modi saga and other sub acts being
played in the political arena all add up to
suggest that a huge tussle is on to resolve the
leadership issue in the BJP once and for all.
LK Advani has t o gi ve way t o someone
younger and if palmists were to see his hand,
all lines except the lifeline have vanished. The
problem before him is that none of the leaders
whom he has groomed are in any position to
come up and take over the reins of the party in
the same way as he and Atal Behari Vajpayee
did for many decades. Murali Manohar Joshi,
the favorite son of the Sangh Parivar is not
getting any younger and thus can at best be at
the hel m for a short durati on i f the RSS
decides. But ultimately, the Saffron brigade
has to f i nd a l ong ti me repl acement for
Vajpayee and Advani. Modi and Gadkari
amongst many others think that they wil l
emerge on top but politics often lays emphasis
on the indispensable factor. In the long run,
there is no one who is indispensable including
Modi since life goes on. Nature recognizes the
principle of dispensability and this is what Modi
and his supporters should see while finalizing
their political strategies.

PM Gilani Indicted For Contempt
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza
Gilani was charged with contempt by the
Supreme Court on Monday, pleading not guilty
to charges that could see him jailed for six
months and disqualified from office.
Summoned over the governments two-year
refusal to write to authorities in Switzerland
asking them to re-open corrupti on cases
against the president Asif Ali Zardari, Gilani is
Pakistans first premier ever to be charged in
office.
Gilani, who swept into court dressed in a dark
suit, grey tie, white shirt and cufflinks, was
charged within minutes of appearing.
Reading out the charge sheet, Judge Nasir
ul-Mulk said the prime minister had "wilfully
flouted, disregarded and disobeyed" orders
from the Supreme Court over re-opening
alleged laundered money cases.
"Do you plead guilty?" asked Mulk.
"No," Gilani replied, adding that he would
respond further in writing.
The court ordered the attorney general to

Swiss bank accounts must be returned at all
costs and cri ti ci zed the all i ed parti es for

Addressing a press conference along with
chairman of the Sindh National Front Mumtaz

would be possible if a letter was written to the

witnesses.
Evidence from Gilanis lawyer will then be
recorded on February 28, three days before
March 2 Senate elections, at which the ruling
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is expected to
win a near-majority of seats.
Gilani was exempted from appearing in court
until further notice.
The hearing lasted less than half an hour and
Gilani left soon after, waving confidently to
crowds of lawyers huddled under gloomy grey
skies and a persistent drizzle.
The PPP leaders dismissed speculation in the
press on Monday that Gilani would soon need
to be replaced.
"Comments about a new prime minister are
premature. The president has immunity,"
Information Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan told
reporters.
"I fail to understand why the government is
apprehensive about writing the letter," Nawaz
said.
He further said that the government's actions
were against the will of the people and instead
of hiding behind the cover of immunity, the
nation's money must be returned and the issue
of immunity could be talked about later.
He said martyrdom is a great sacrifice but the

People's Money in Swiss Banks Must
Be Returned: Nawaz Sharif
A Nice Story
Hasan Al-Basri (d. 728 CE) had a neighbor
who was a Christian. This neighbor had a
toilet on the roof of his apartment and it used
to leak through a hole in the roof of Hasan
Al-Basris apartment.Hasan placed a bucket
beneath the hole to catch the urine that
woul d l eak t hrough i t and di scard t he
cont ent s at t he end of each day. Thi s
continued for 20 years.
Then one day, Hasan fell ill and his Christian
nei ghbor came t o vi si t hi m. When he
entered, the neighbor noticed the bucket of
urine that was leaking through the hole in his
ceiling and asked Hasan astoundingly: "How
long have you been tolerating this harm from
me?!" Hasan replied: "For 20 years."
So the Christian neighbor took off his belt
(which was the clothing of the Christians
during that time) and accepted Islam.(Hilyah
Al-Awliya)
Do we Musl i ms t oday tol erat e a smal l
inconvenience for a week from our relatives,
let alone our neighbors? Even if we kept
quiet, it would show up in our attitude and
behavior. Hasan Al-Basri not only tolerated it
for 20 years, but his behavior was so normal
that the neighbor didnt have any idea of the
harm he was causing. How much tolerance
do we show f or each ot her? I f we do
something good once in a whi le for our
neighbor or relative, we mention that and
brag about it a hundred times. And if we
suffer harm, regardless if it was intentional or
not, we would point out that mistake and the
harm we suffered several times more.
The above example of one of our earl y
scholars of Islam is worth contemplating
about. His behavior and manners with his
neighbor, who was not even a Muslim, is a
wake-up call for Muslims in the 21st century
on how far we have strayed from Islamic
teachings. (Yasser, from Syracuse)
