1/ Wash hands 2/ Introduce yourself to the patient 3/Check identity of patient against notes 4/ Gain valid informed consent 5/ Ascertain allergic status 6/ Prepare trolley 7/ Collect and check equipment for expiry and package integrity 8/ Confirm patients ongoing consent and check for questions 9/ Put on PPE 10/ Prepare environment, ensuring privacy 11/ Prepare patient knees bent, hips flexed and feet comfortably apart 12/ Protect bed with pad or towel 13/ Wash hands or decontaminate using alcohol gel if appropriate 14/ Open equipment maintaining sterile field 15/ Put on sterile gloves (2 pairs) 16/ Arrange sterile drape so it is positioned under the buttocks 17/ Swabbing downwards (i.e. front to back) thoroughly cleanse using 0.9% sodium chloride (Normasol), if using the sachet ask an assistant to swab the opening end of the packet before pouring into the pot. Dry the labia minora and vestibule 18/ Anaesthetise the urethra with Instillagel 19/ Allow 3-5 minutes for effect 20/ Remove top gloves 21/ Arrange sterile receiver or have drainage bag close to hand 22/ Open catheter packaging 23/ Hold the catheter in dominant hand and gently pass female catheter in a slightly upward and backward direction 24/ Ask patient to take deep breaths 25/ Insert the catheter approximately 10 cm 26/ Once urine begins to flow, pass the catheter a further 3-5 cm 27/ Slowly inflate the balloon with the correct amount of sterile water 28/ If the patient experiences any pain STOP withdraw water, reposition and re-inflate again 29/ Clean away any excess gel 30/ Attach suitable drainage bag 31/ Make patient comfortable, dispose of equipment 32/ Remove and dispose of PPE 33/ Wash hands 34/ Place label from catheter packaging in patient notes and document the following: Date, time, indication for catheter. Residual volume, anything unusual about colour/sediment etc. If MSU taken, if any blood/ trauma from insertion Thank patient Clean up and redress patient and make sure patient is comfortable Thank the patient
