MIDTERM EXAM 1 As a current manager, how will you communicate the requirements of an entry-level customer service representative to a candidate who just arrived at your office for an interview? Will you describe the job in terms of competences? Knowledge? Skills? Abilities? Explain your answer? Before the interview, I, as the current manager, should already have the job analysis of the customer representative position. The job analysis provides the measure of job responsibilities for use not only in hiring, but also other area of human resource management such as development, compensation, etc. The job analysis provides information that helps me understand what traits, skills, quality the employees should have. Therefore, I will communicate the requirements of an entry-level customer service representative to a candidate who just arrived at your office for an interview based on the information from the job description. There are many methods to construct the job analysis; those are examples of quantitative methods: y Functional Job Analysis (FJA) y Position Analysis Questionnaire (PAQ) y Management Positions Description Questionnaire (MPDQ) y Many new quantitative job analysis processes (CMQ, O*NET)

Each method results in different types of requirements for the employees to carry out the job successfully. These requirements could be in term of knowledge, skills or abilities, or competency. So the method I use to explain to the candidate will vary with the types of job analysiss requirements that I have. If the requirements are expressed in term of knowledge, I will explain it also in term of knowledge, if the requirements are in term of skills, I will describe them in term of skills, and so on. Some years ago, competency assessment is just a tools used to supplement job analysis, and now it has become a more popular method of constructing job analysis. Let supposed that I got a competency-based job analysis. The competencies for my companys customer representative are listed in two clusters as following: y Communication competencies (persuasion, interpersonal, competency) y Conceptual skills (problem solvingcompetency) In this case, I will first describe the cluster competency, then move on to explain the competency included in that cluster.

MIDTERM EXAM 2: Have you made a career choice? What is it, and do you have the skills and personality for the particular career? How did you determine this? In high school, I always dreamed to become a manager one day. That was the reason for me to enroll in the Bachelor of Business Administration course at University of Economics and Business. However, until learning the human resource management subject, I just had a vague imagination of what job I would do in the future. After reading chapter 10 of the book Human resource management, 12th edition of Gary Dessler published by Pearson Publication, I followed the guide line in the chapter 10s appendix to make my career choice. The 4 steps in which I have taken are as following: 1. Identify Your Career Stage

Each persons career goes through different stages, and the stages you are in influence your knowledge of and preference for various occupations. Currently Im 22 years old, and I begin to explore various occupational alternatives. So currently, Im in the exploration stage. 2. Identify My Occupational Orientation: John Holland stated that personality (including values, motives, and needs) is one career choice determinant. Based on research with his Vocational Preference Test, Holland found six basic personality types or orientations: y Realistic orientation y Investigative orientation y Social orientation y Conventional orientation y Enterprising orientation y Artistic orientation To find out my occupational orientation, I do the Vocational Preference Test online at http://career.missouri.edu . (This test called Career Interest Game and was based on John Hollands Vocational Preference Test). I found characteristic in of the two following orientations best describes my personality Investigative orientations characteristics Inquisitive Analytical Scientific Observant Precise

Identify Your Career Direction This approach initiated at Harvard Business School. This method assumes that all executives activities is base on one or more of eight core activities. The test in this section, Finding the job you want, helps future managers to identify career direction and make career choice in which they will be happy. The result of the test Finding the job you want Core activities Application of technology Counciling and mentoring Qualtitative analysis Managing people Theory development and conceptual thinking Enterprise control Creative Production Influence through language and idea: score 3 2 4 5 0 7 6 1

I score highest in enterprise control and creative production. The following is the description of what kind of successful business people share my interest:

Creative production and enterprise control: Solo entrepreneur, senior executives in industries where the product or service is of a creative nature (fashion, entertainment, advertising, media) 4. Identify Your Skills The appendix introduces the general aptitude test battery (GATB)for identifying skills and talents for career planning purposes. GABT it is complex test which I cannot take in Vietnam; so I do not really know what types of skill I really possess. Anyway, through the entire tests above, I already have a clearer career choice: may be a solo entrepreneur or and executives in a creative business. I also keep in mind that choosing a career is not a one-time event that happens in early adulthood, but career management is actually a life-long process, and I continue to make consequential career choices over the years.
