Q & A on Buddhism
Based on Buddhadasa Bhikkhus booklet

6** -6

Translated by Supaporn Vathanaprida

-

Maha Parinibbana Sutta3

+4 / 0&

3.Buddha teaches the law of cause and effect; nothing exists independently of other
things. This process of dependent originationis considered the essence ofBuddhist teaching. Assaji, one of Buddha's first five disciples explained this teaching to Sariputra before he ordained that
All dhammas arise due to causes and conditions, all dhammas cease due to
causes and conditions. Lord Buddha, the great sramana4, always teaches
thus.
The word "dhammas" here signifies everything in life, all phenomena of the universe. Every object and phenomenon in the universe arises because of the
coming together of many causes and conditions. When the causes and conditions are no longer present, objects and phenomena cease to exist.
This principle of cause and effect is in line with modern science. Just as in science the Buddha did not require his followers to have dogmatic belief in anything that he taught. In fact, he advised people not to blindly accept what he
taught, but research on them for themselves before accepting. The knowledge
the Buddha acquired represents the true reality of nature. Scientists also aspire
to understand, through scientific method, the same true reality of nature.
4.The Buddha teaches us to Avoid evil, do good, and purify the
mind. (OvadaPatimokka)5
In practical everyday terms, this means the practice of sila (morality), samadhi
(meditation), and panna (wisdom).
Sabbapapassa akaranam Avoid Evil
Kusalassa upasampada Do Good
Sacitta pariyodapanam Purify the Mind
Etam Buddhana sananam This is the teachings of all Buddhas
Dhammapada (V. 183)

5.The final admonitionof the Buddha isimpermanence or change. The Buddha says all
compounded things, all experiences (mental and physical), all phenomena by
their very nature decay and die, and are disappointing: therefore, we should be
mindful on objects of the senses in order to obtain liberation. In other word, only
through vigilance you can succeed.Make an effort to be clearly aware of all
moments.
Impermanent, subject to change, are component things. Strive on with heedfulness!
Questions:
What are the basic principles of Buddhism?
Answer: The main principles of Buddhism are:
The Middle Way
Self-reliance
The Law of Cause and Effect, or Dependent Origination
Avoid evil, do good, and purify the mind
Impermanence or Change
Strive on with mindfulness. Right here, now, mindfully.
Short answer: Buddha says, Nothing is worth clinging to.
The Buddha discovers that attachment to people, places, and things causes us much
suffering because the nature of these things is ever-changing. Openness to the moment
and stop trying to change things we have no control over is the most important thing we
can do to end suffering in our lives and open to happiness. Ajahn Chah, a Thai monk
says, "If you let go a little you will have a little peace, if you let go a lot you will have a lot of
peace, if you let go completely you will have complete peace."
Question: How do we let go of everything?
Answer: Buddha gives us very detailed step- by- step guidesthat:
In what is seen, there should be just the seen;
In what is heard, there should be just the heard;
In what is sensed, there should be just the sensed;
In what is thought, there should be just the thought.
This is non-attachment because We are what we think. All that we are arises with our

thoughts. With our thoughts we make the world. (Dhammapada) To be empty of views or
opinions meansa lack of clinging. The clinging, the clung-to, are what make the ego
arise. The notion of "me" and mine arises because of attachment. Through the aspect of
impermanence, suffering, and emptiness we can experience non-self.
Grasping, clinging, or attachment only brings suffering because it is unquenchable.
Since change is constant we must realize that nothing is worth grasping on to or identifying with. We should see how we relate to all phenomena and learn to act on them more
skillfully. Letting go and let it be is the way to liberation. Nothing whatever should be
grasped at and clung to as "me" or "mine." In the world of constant change it is very essential to cultivate non-attachment if we are to live a serene and happy life.
Questions: Is Buddha alive? Where can I meet him?
Answers: Buddha is alive and well in the lives of practicing Buddhists.
One who sees the Dhamma sees me. (the Buddha)
One who seesme sees the Dhamma.
One who sees not the Dhamma, though grasping at my robe cannot be said
to have seen me.6
Buddha here is one and the same as the Dhamma, or the Truth, so anyone who sees the
Truth can be said to have seen Buddha. To see just his physical body would not be to see
the Buddha at all and would bring no real benefit.
When we pay respect to Buddhaimages we should see not only the representation of
Buddha but also the Truth. We should reflect on the virtues of the Buddha. Having confidence in the Buddhas teachings we will find peace of letting go, the end of suffering.
Question: What good has Buddhism done to mankind?
Answer: Buddhism offers a precise definition of man's problem, along with an exact "plan
of salvation" for everyone.
1. Buddhism first leads children to the right path.
2. Buddhism shows how to develop self- control to young people.
3. Buddhism gives householders secrets for success as well as tips for
relieving the sufferings of everyday life.
4. Buddhism helps lift spirits of older practitioners to final peace. (lokutta 7

3

Maha Parinibbana Sutta is The Discourse on the Great Decease, being the
sixteenth and longest discourse in the Collection of Long Discourses (Dgha
Nikya) of the Pli Canon. The text describes the events leading up to the Buddha's death and his travels during the last few months of his life.
4
Sramana is a wandering monk.
5
OvadaPatimokkha is the teaching given by the Buddha to a spontaneous gathering of 1,250 enlightened monks. It is a summary of the rules for the Sangha,
composed before the monastic rules for training had been established in detail.
6
The qualities of the Dhamma (Law, truth) are the same as the qualities of the
Buddha and form his "truth body" or "Dhamma Kaya": In the Samyutta Nikaya,
Vakkali Sutta, Buddha said to his disciple Vakkali that,
"Yo kho Vakkali dhamma passati so ma passati" O Vakkali, whoever sees
the Dhamma, sees me [the Buddha].
7
Lokuttara means greater than worldly things, higher than worldly things, beyond worldly things, or supramundane. Examples: Rebirth is a mundane teaching for faith and morality. It encourages sila, the essential first stage of the practice. Not-self is a supramundane teaching for relinquishment. It leads to Nibbana(Nirvana).
