Syllabus for Online Teaching Course: ESL/Relocation to the San Francisco Bay Area Instructor: Jessica Markham Course

Description/Purpose: The course focuses on preparing adult English language learners to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area from their home countries. Aimed at intermediate-advanced English speakers, this course will allow participants to develop written communication skills, oral communication skills, gain knowledge about immigration specific to their circumstances, and to connect with others who will be relocating to the San Francisco Bay Area who are currently living outside of the United States. The course is also open to learners who have recently relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area who would like to obtain more information about the area and to improve their English language skills. In addition to text books, students will be directed to online sources that can be used for completing assignments and obtaining general information. Parts of the course are tailored to each participants individual needs for improvement, and the instructor will direct each student to sections of the handbook that best suit these needs in addition to providing corrections and explanations. The instructor is also available to help students with pronunciation and other areas needing improvement through Skype. Course Objectives: At the end of the 8 week course, participants should be able to: By the end of the course, learners will be able to create a 2-3 page narrative with fewer than 10 grammatical errors that explains their reasons for relocating the to United States, goals they hope to accomplish in the United States, and the resources that they will need in order to relocate. Students will be able to explain 5 differences between the H-1B Visa and the B-1 Visa in a written assignment. Within a written assignment, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of what to do if they need to renew visas or replace damaged ones. Identify appropriate resources to assist with the transition to the San Francisco Bay Area. Define ways in which they can integrate into their new communities and workplaces while still being able to maintain culture and traditions.

Performance and Evaluation:

Participation 20% Quizzes (2 throughout the course) 10% Activity Assignments 30% Individual Narrative (~3 pages) 40% Participation Requirements: Students are expected to comment on at least one classmates activity posted on the forum each week. Late Assignments: Students are expected to meet deadlines, but in appropriate circumstances, extensions with no penalty or a minimal penalty, may be granted. The instructor should be notified as soon as possible if students know that they need an extension. Students are permitted to turn in assignments late up to a week after the deadline to receive half credit. Texts: The McGraw-Hill Handbook of English Grammar and Usage by Mark Lester and Larry Beason, United States, 2005. U.S. Immigration and Citizenship Q&A (Second Edition) by Debbie M. Schell, Richard E. Schell, and Kurt A. Wagner, Naperville, IL: Sphinx Publishing, 2006. Excerpts will be available on the course website, but students are encouraged to purchase the textbooks. Other Materials: Participants of the class should have access to a microphone, video camera, or web cam that allows them to record themselves speaking if they would like to participate in video or audio conferencing. Students should also either have photographs of themselves or have access to a digital camera, scanner, or other equipment that will allow them to post a picture in their profile.
