ASSESSMENT & ENGAGEMENT OF PERSONS WITH CO-OCCURRING DISORDERS: BASIC SKILLS AND PRACTICES
Course Description and Objectives
This workshop will provide an overview of community mental health practices to be used with adults diagnosed with co-occurring serious and persistent psychiatric disabilities and substance use disorders. At the end of this workshop participants will have a basic understanding of the basic skills related to the clinical assessment and engagement of persons with major psychiatric and substance use disorders. At the conclusion of this workshop, each participant will have developed an understanding of: 1. The impact and prevalence of substance use disorders in populations diagnosed with serious and persistent psychiatric disabilities. 2. Strength-based assessment skills in regard to the major clinical psychiatric disorders and how those disorders interact with substance use. 3. The basic principles and practices related to the engagement of adults with co-occurring disorders and techniques for screening. This workshop benefits both clinicians and frontline staff who work with adults. Attendees will receive 3 Continuing Education credits.

Presenter
Michael A. Mancini is an Associate Professor and current Chair of the Health and Mental Health Concentration in the School of Social Work at Saint Louis University. He teaches graduate level courses in community mental health practice and clinical diagnosis. Dr. Mancinis research and teaching focus primarily on recovery-oriented social work practices and strategies for adults with cooccurring serious psychiatric disabilities and substance use disorders.
