Child’’s Fur Muff

MATERIALS
• Body: one piece fur 9” x 18” (real or faux) NOTIONS
• Lining: one piece fabric 9” x 18” • 1/2 yard of 1/4” elastic
• Neck Strap: • Thread

INSTRUCTIONS

CUT
• 1 piece of faux fur 9” x 18”. The nap of the fur should run along the 18” edge.
• 1 piece of lining 9” x 18”. I used an Amy Butler cotton print, but feel free to experiment.
Choose satin for an elegant muff or flannel for snuggly warmth.
• 2 pieces of 1/4” elastic each 9” long
• 1 piece of cording, ribbon or fabric 36” long x 2” wide. This will be the neck strap.

CONSTRUCTING THE MUFF

This will create a casing for the elastic.
Trim away the excess fabric on the outer edge.
This will eliminate some bulk when you turn the
muff right side out.
Turn right side out.
5) With right sides together, sew the short edges
of the muff. Be sure to catch the straps in the
stitching, but be careful not to catch the lining or
the casing openings.

4) Pin the neck strap to the right side of the muff
matching raw edges. Sew securely in place,
making sure to keep the lining free.
To make your own neck strap, cut a piece of
fabric 36” x 2”. Press in 1/2” on the long edges
- wrong sides together. Sew trim over the raw
edges. This will both secure the folded edges and
make the strap pretty!
6) Insert a 9” piece of elastic into both casings.
Secure one end of the elastic as you work the
elastic through the casing so you don’t acciden-
tally pull the elastic all the way through. This will
be a bit tricky depending on the thickness of your
fur and lining fabric. Sew elastic in place in the
seam allowance. Resew the short edges, this
time make sure to catch the elastic.
7) Pin the lining edges together. 8) Hand sew the lining together. If you prefer you
can machine stitch this as it will be hidden inside
of the muff.

9) Turn muff right side out. The elastic will pull
the side edges in slightly and the faux fur will
cover the edge of the lining fabric.
10) Create a fabric flower to decorate the front
of the muff. There are multiple craft and sewing
books that include instructions for fabric flow-
ers as well as many fabric flower tutorials on the
Internet. Sew or glue the flower to the front of the
fur muff.
Give the new fur muff to a little one and watch
the smiles begin.
