Given a number of objects of apparently the same material but different masses and linear dimensions,
determine whether or not they are all of the same material and for those which are, what that material is?
Apparatus:
-A balance
-A vernier calipers
-3 different rectangular objects
-2 cylinder objects
Method:
1)First to measure the density of the rectangular objects we measured with an electronic balance to
find out the mass ;then for the volume the rectangular blocks were measured with an vernier caliper to be
more accurate. The volume was found by doing length x width x height. The density was found by doing
mass divided by volume.
2) To measure the density of a cylinder, first it was measured with a balance to find out the mass,
then for the volume, the cylinder was measured with vernier calipers to be accurate. The volume was found
by doing diameter x length. The density was found by doing mass divided by volume.
Results:
1st block: mass average/g=(45.3+45.2+45.2+45.3+45.3)/5=45.3 g = 0.05 +- 0.05 kg
59,9 mm=0.06 m
Volume= 0.06*0.006*0.011=3.96 m3
6,10 mm=0.006 m
10,5 mm=0.011 m
30.5mm=0.31m
3.00mm=0.003m
15.5mm=0.12m
Volume=0.31*0.003*0.12=1.12 m3
Volume= 1,12+-2,13 % m3
Volume= 0.03*0.002*0.011=6.6 m3
10.5mm=0.011m
%uncertainty= ((0.005/0.03)*100)+((0.005/0.002)*100)+((0.005/0.011)*100)=0.17+2.5+0.45=3.12%
Desnity=mass/volume=(0.007+-0.05kg)/(6.6+-3.12%)=0.001+-0.25 kgm-3
