Screws Introduction Electric motors are everywhere; even your computer has electric motors to power its cooling fans and hard disks. Building a simple DC electric motor is a great way to learn how they work, and it's really fun to watch your creation spin. How does it work? Motors convert electrical energy from a battery or voltage source into mechanical energy used to cause rotation. Objective The objective of this project is to build a simple electric motor from scratch. Procedure 1. Wrap several loops of magnet wire. Leave 3 to 4 inches of wire uncoiled at the front and end of the loop. 2. Strip about 3 to 4 inches of coating off both ends of the wire. 3. Wrap both ends of the wire around the coil. Allow the end wires to protrude from the coiled wire. 4. Touch the loop ends of the paper clips, one at a time, to the ends of the D battery. Fasten the clips to the battery with a strong rubber band. 5. Attach a magnet to the side of the battery. Arrange the battery so that the paper clip leads are pointing slightly upward or at an angle away from the ground. 2. Ceramic Disk Magnet 4. Safety Pins 6. Wood Block
