Introduction of Faisalabad City

Faisalabad, originally a tiny town, founded to act as an agricultural market has now grown into a giant size metropolitan city which enjoys the third position in the country as far as population and industrial growth is concerned. It is an important industrial centre located in the Punjab province, west of Lahore. Faisalabad has an estimated population of 2.6 million and is expanded over an area of 58.56 square kilometers. The climate of the district touches the two extremes. The summer season starts from April and continues till October. The winter season, on the other hand, starts from November and continues till March. It was formally known as Lyallpur which came into being in 1880 with the city centre designed by Captain Poham Young, to imitate the Union flag with eight roads radiating from a large clock tower in the centre of eight separate bazaars. After independence, the city of Lyallpur marched rapidly on the path of progress. In 1977, the name of the city was changed to Faisalabad after the name of late King Faisal of Saudi Arabia. In 1985, the city was upgraded as a Division including the Districts of Faisalabad, Jhang and Toba Tek Singh. Faisalabad city has the distinction of being a seat of world famous Agricultural University and equally renowned agricultural research institute, Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and Biology (NIAB) and National Institute for Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering (NIGBE).

Faisalabad district has made rapid strides in the field of industry after independence. It is now called the Manchester of Asia for its extensive development of textile industry. Roughly, there are 512 large Industrial units, out of which 328 are textile units, 92 engineering units and 92 chemicals and food processing units. There are also some 12,000 house-hold industries, which include some 60,000 power loom factories.
