Mary Kelly Concept Paper 2 LIS 451LE * What are the basic methods for troubleshooting network problems?

Here are some avenues to follow if you are having network problems: Check to make sure your computer is plugged-in, turned on, your ISP bill is not past due, and all your connections are secure! Sometimes a quick fix to network problems is to reset your wireless router and/or Comcast Router. If you have a power surge or loss of electricity you can usually fix a network issue with a reset of your router(s) and restart your computer. Check to make sure your network interface card is connected. Do not rely on the network connection icon because it is not as reliable as the link light found at the back of your computer. This light will indict if you have a good connection. Check the protocol between the computer and the Internet Service provider. Open a terminal window and ping your IP address to see if you get a response from your router, Internet Service Providers, etc. To locate your IP address, open a terminal window and type in command line ipconfig, or ifconfig, depending on your system. Run a traceroute to see if you can locate a break in between the source and destination nodes. When all else fails call your ISP and see if the trouble is on their end, although running a traceroute should clue you on whether or not the issue lies with your ISP. * Describe the diagnostics information contained in a traceroute and how it can be used. A traceroute is an excellent diagnostic tool when you are having network issues. Traceroute will check how well you system or network is responding and where there may be a break in connection. Traceroute can basically pinpoint which host is not responding. My MacBook has a great Traceroute application in the Network utilities folder. You can easily run a traceroute by typing in the web address you want to trace a route to. Traceroute is different from Ping because traceroute maps out a route whereas ping simply checks to see if another computer is reachable or responsive. Traceroute can be used to help troubleshoot connection issues. It can give you clues to whether a server is too busy for your request or perhaps a firewall is blocking you from a host. It is a great diagnostic tool and can help prove that your network is not down. * Create a simple diagram illustrating all the major components of your home (or a friend's home) network.
