Systems of equations can be solved by graphing or by using substitution or elimination. What are the pros and cons of each method? Which method do you like best? Why? What circumstances would cause you to use a different method? Consider responding to your classmates by indicating pros and cons they may not have considered or persuading them to see the value of the method you like best (if you chose different methods). Describe situations in which you might use their methods of solving.
Graphing Pros: With Graphing you can visually see one of the three things that can happen (one solution, no solution, or infinitely many solutions). One Solution Graphs intersect. The system is consistent and the equations are independent. No Solutions Graphs are parallel. The system is inconsistent and the equations are independent. Infinitely Many Solutions Equations have the same graph. The system is consistent and the equations are dependent. Cons: Graphing alone is not perfectly accurate, and may give only approximate answers, and not always the fastest method. Exact fraction solutions are difficult to determine graphically. Substitution Pros: Method is faster and more accurate than graphing. Cons: To be careful when removing parentheses as you can easily make a mistake. Solutions not quickly seen with fractions and computations can be extensive. Elimination Pros: Method is faster and more accurate than graphing, and easier than substitution for some systems. Cons: Can not see solutions quickly. I like both the Substitution and Elimination Methods, but would choose the Elimination Method as first choice. I like these two methods because they are faster and you can get a more accurate answer. The only circumstance I can think of using graphing is if asked to because I needed to show my work.
