Read Across America
We started March off with a bang by celebrating Dr. Seusss birthday and National Read Across America Day on the 2nd. Students in Pre-K, Kindergarten, First, and Second grades received free books from the Statesboro Regional Library as part of Reading is Fundamentaland as their very own birthday presents. The Chic-Fil-A cow was in attendance to greet students with hugs and high-fives. Athletes from Statesboro High School also visited classrooms to read Dr. Seuss classics such as The Cat in the Hat and Hop on Pop.

Fifth-Grade Book Club

The fifth-grade book club began meeting every Wednesday of this month. These 12 students, the top of their classes, are part of our Kindle eReader pilot program. The students began by reading Suzanne Collins dystopian bestseller The Hunger Games on the Kindles. They met during their lunch once a week to discuss the novel and also participated in online discussion through a blog. As a reward for successfully participating in the club, the students were treated to a viewing of the new film after class. Next they will be reading The Giver, a young adult novel with very similar themes to The Hunger Games.

New Books for Spring

We added over a hundred new titles to our fiction and nonfiction collections this month, using funds from Februarys book fair. We also purchased a brand new set of 2012 World Book encyclopedias, replacing the outdated set from 1982.

Story Time
As always we were busy each day with story times. This month saw the kindergarteners learning about dental hygiene and the seasons. The first graders studied rocks and St. Patricks Day, and the second graders were given an introduction to research skills while learning about Georgia landforms.

Accelerated Reader Party

We also wrapped up the month with a celebration for those students who met their Accelerated Reader goals for this nine weeks. These avid readers were rewarded with popsicles and bouncy castles. Both were big hits.
